How Much Energy Are You Wasting Throughout the Day? š¤Æš
Thatās the question I asked during my keynote at the Drive Against Depression (DAD) Summer Drive DayĀ this weekend. ššØ
It was the perfect mix of stunning roads, great company, and meaningful conversationsĀ about mental health, movement, and how we manage our energy day to day. šæāļø
What became clear very quickly is that most people donāt feel burnt out overnightā¦
They feel quietly drained, without really knowing why.
š The Energy Audit: Where Is Your Battery Going?
During the session, I spoke about The Energy Audit.
Not in a corporate, tick-box senseā¦but as a very human question:
š What drains you?
š What recharges you?
So often, we wait until the end of the day to realise weāve got nothing left in the tank. By then, itās too late.
But what if we were more intentional throughout the dayĀ about keeping our battery topped up?
Energy isnāt restored only through big holidays or long weekends.
Itās rebuilt through tiny moments, repeated consistently.
Some of the most powerful examples shared on the day were beautifully simple:
āļø A lunchtime walk in the sunshine
š®āšØ A 2-minute box breathing reset after a difficult customer interaction
šÆāāļø A deep and meaningful chat with your work bestie
š That unexpected giggle at a ridiculous cat meme
š A home-cooked, nutritious treat brought into a meeting by a thoughtful leader
None of these are revolutionary on their own.
Together, they can change how an entire day feels.
š¦ The Third Space: Transition Matters
I also spoke about The Third Space, a concept from Dr Adam Fraser, which focuses on the transition between rolesā¦work to home, meeting to meeting, leader to parent.
If we want to bring our best selvesĀ into whatever comes next, we need to create a brief pause to:
š¹ Reflect
What just happened? What went well? What could I have done better? š¤
š¹ Rest
Breathe, reset, physically and mentally downshift. š
š¹ Reset
Choose how you want to show up next. šÆ
Without this pause, stress simply carries overā¦interaction after interactionā¦until we feel flat, reactive, and exhausted.
š§ The Real Energy Leak Most People Miss
What really struck me in the conversations afterwards was how many people said:
āI feel drainedā¦but I donāt actually know why.ā
Itās rarely the big things.
Itās the tiny, unintentional energy leaksĀ that add up:
⢠Mindless scrolling between tasks
⢠Eating lunch rushed at your desk
⢠Constant mental switching with no pause
⢠Going straight from pressure to pressure without a reset
None of these feel dramatic.
Together, they quietly empty the battery.
šÆ Energy Is the Foundation of Performance and Connection
When we start to take control of these moments, something powerful happens.
We donāt just feel betterā¦we:
⢠Perform better
⢠Connect better
⢠Show up with more patience and clarity
⢠Actually enjoy our days more
Because life isnāt about simply getting through the day.
Itās about having the energy to make the most of it. š
Huge thanks to the Drive Against Depression teamĀ for another incredible event. Iām very proud of the small role that Build a BridgeĀ and Essentio HealthĀ play in supporting the work youāre doing. š
Amazing roads, brilliant peopleā¦and yes, a few Mustangs š thrown in for good measure.
I was speaking with a senior leader recently who said, almost in passing, āI just assume from here itās about slowing down and managing the slide.ā There was no drama in it⦠justā¦
